Consider another opinion when
• The recommended repair is expensive or involves major reconstruction, relining or replacement.
• The explanation relies on fear but provides little photographic or written documentation.
• You are told a system is unsafe but are not shown the observed condition or the basis for that conclusion.
• The person cannot clearly identify the fireplace/chimney system, applicable manufacturer instructions, or the defect being discussed.
• A company pressures you to authorize major work immediately when there is no immediate emergency.
What a useful second opinion should do
Ask the second professional to inspect independently rather than simply agree or disagree with the first estimate. Give them access to prior reports after they have documented their own observations when practical.
