FOR HOMEOWNERS

Before hiring a chimney professional, verify the person—not just the company logo.

A practical checklist for checking chimney-industry credentials before someone works on your home.

1. Ask who is coming

Get the technician or inspector’s full name before the appointment when possible.

2. Ask what credential they personally hold

A company may advertise credentials held by one person. Ask whether the individual performing the inspection, sweep, installation or repair holds the credential.

3. Verify with the issuer

Use the issuing organization’s official directory. VerifySweep links homeowners to CSIA and NFI public verification resources rather than asking you to trust a badge on a website.

4. Match the credential to the work

A chimney-and-venting credential, hearth installation specialty, inspection-focused education and manufacturer training demonstrate different areas of education. More logos do not automatically mean greater competence.

5. Keep experience in perspective

Credentials are one screening tool. Documentation quality, relevant field experience, insurance, manufacturer instructions, applicable codes and willingness to recommend a second opinion also matter.

Verify from the source.

Use official credential and policy sources whenever possible.
