Questions to Ask About Chimney Credentials

A homeowner guide to asking the right questions about certifications, memberships and the person actually performing the work.

1. Who holds the credential?

Ask for the name of the individual credential holder, not only whether the company displays a certification logo.

2. Is it current?

Use the issuing organization’s official directory or verification method when available.

3. What does it cover?

A chimney certification, hearth-fuel certification, inspection credential, manufacturer course and trade-association membership are not interchangeable.

4. Will that person perform or supervise my work?

A company may employ a credentialed professional without every employee holding the same credential.

5. What else supports the recommendation?

For significant repairs, ask for inspection findings, photos, measurements, applicable manufacturer instructions and a clear written scope.

VerifySweep standard: Evidence should support the exact statement being made. A suspicious indicator is a reason to investigate, not a verdict.
