Certification
A credential awarded under an organization's certification requirements, commonly involving an exam and renewal requirements. Verify the specific program and current status with the issuer.
Advanced designation
A credential or designation requiring qualifications beyond an organization's foundational certification. Requirements vary by issuer.
Membership
Participation in a trade association or guild. Membership can provide education and professional resources but should not automatically be described as technical certification.
Course completion
Evidence that someone completed a particular educational program. It may be valuable training without being a standalone professional certification.
Manufacturer training
Product- or system-specific education from a manufacturer. Particularly useful when installing, servicing or troubleshooting that manufacturer's products.
Field experience
Practical experience matters, but years in business alone do not tell a homeowner which systems, standards or repair methods a person understands.
Continuing education
Ongoing training used to maintain or expand professional knowledge. Current CSIA and NFI programs both emphasize continuing education/renewal cycles.
